Relationship between physical activity levels and academic performance in a group of family medicine residents from Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico

Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between the level of physical activity and academic performance presented by a group of Family Medicine residents. Methods: Analytical, cross-sectional, ambispective study in the Family Medicine Unit No.1 of Obregon city, Sonora. Mexico. The sample was made up of 100% of the resident physicians in the family medicine specialty in total: 59 residents. It was carried out from December 2021 to February 2022. The international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) in its long version was applied to them, and the final grades of the 2021-2022 academic year and the grades obtained in the departmental exam were taken into account correspondent. Results: The χ² statistical test was applied to check the relationship between the level of physical activity of resident doctors and the final grades of the 2021-2022 cycle and a p of 0.746 95% CI was obtained. The same measurement was carried out with the level of physical activity and the grade obtained in the departmental exam, obtaining a P value of 0.673 95% CI. Conclusions: It was concluded that there is no relationship between physical activity and academic performance in family medicine residents; this is probably due to the multidimensionality of academic performance.
