Family functioning using the BAMI-Muñoz Instrument

Objective: To evaluate family functioning in families in an area hospital by applying the BAMI-Munoz Instrument.
Material and methods: Observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study; in IMSS rightful beneficiary patients assigned to Hospital General de Zona con Medicina Familiar No.12, from January to June 2023. The BAMI-Muñoz instrument of 35 items was applied, which categorizes families as: functional, mild dysfunctional, moderate dysfunctional and severe dysfunctional, through 6 domains: problem solving, communication, roles, affective involvement, affective responses and behavioral control.
Results: 342 participants, average age 45 + 17 years, with a higher frequency of female gender. 61.99% of the families were functional, 34.21% presented mild dysfunction, 3.51% moderate dysfunction and 0.29% severe dysfunction. Regarding the dimensions measured, behavioral control was the most altered. A total of 89.18% fulfilled the roles and in 92.11% there was affective involvement.
Conclusion: In this study, it was identified that the majority of the families of Lázaro Cárdenas Michoacán are functional families and those that presented dysfunction showed greater impairment in behavioral control.
